The Secret to Bespoke Interiors

To create a home that is personally yours, individuality and quality are key, says interior designer Shay Geyer

Shay Geyer’s design philosophy is simple: Interiors should reflect the personal style and lifestyle of the people who call it home.

“The best interior designers don’t force their own look on their clients but rather help them discover their own unique aesthetic,” says Shay, whose firm is based in Dallas. “When working with someone new, I pay close attention to the colors they wear, the type of fashions they sport, and the descriptive words that they use. Sometimes that’s all it takes to get me pointed in the right direction.”

“Navy is the new neutral—it pairs well with any color,” says Geyer. The rich, versatile finish is the very reason the designer chose the Hartman Chest, available from Lillian August for Hickory White, for her own home. The chest’s Carrara marble top, stately columns, and brass hardware nod to the neoclassical style and complement the arched architectural elements of the space, as well as the Palladian-inspired mirror that hangs above it.

Custom dining room chairs with blue velvet upholstery and a dark wood oblong table furnish a dining room designed by Shay Geyer. The room also features a crystal chandelier, a botanical wallpaper with blue flowers on a white background, a mirrored sideboard, and a rug featuring gold-toned ginko leaf print on a cream background. Tall drapery panels in a soft gold silk are trimmed in a blue Greek key pattern. A hot pink orchid on the sideboard and pink peonies in blue crystal vases add contrast to the room’s blue, gold, silver and white palette.

For host and hostess chairs, Geyer chose the Bryson Chairs from Lillian August for Hickory White. Their crisp lines and exaggerated scale give a classically inspired dining room a fresh perspective. Geyer took full advantage of Sherrill Furniture’s customization program by outfitting the pair with espresso-finished legs to match the dining table. She repeated the sapphire velvet and brushed nickel nailhead trim on the seats of the Chinese Chippendale chairs for cohesion.

A beachy bedroom with white walls and a pair of twin beds with custom headboards. The blue-and-white décor includes a funky light fixture, blue-and-white stripe rug, botanical upholstery on the frame, a denim blue ottomans and drapery panels. The duvets and pillows are white, with a geometric print used as a border accent

Trimmed in nickel nailhead, a pair of Sherrill Furniture's DC12 Ottomans in a textured navy performance fabric feel soft enough for the bedroom but work hard enough for a beach setting. More than 220 high-performance indoor/outdoor fabrics in the Sherrill program make it possible for any design to be both pretty and practical.

Geyer finds that the Guy Clipped Corner Credenza, available from Lillian August for Hickory White, nestles easily into hard-to-fit spaces. While it is shallow in depth, it is deep in detail. The walnut trim around the white lacquer base highlights the elegant edges of the exterior while the velvet-lined top drawer stores jewelry safely inside.

Punchy colors and funky prints inspire bright ideas. Taking her cues from the wallcovering in this teen’s study, Geyer paired the built-in workstation with the Ally Chair from Lillian August for Hickory White. Comfortable and chic with its tall barrel back and Greek key detail in the nailhead trim, this chair can bounce from room to room when Little Einstein isn’t cracking the books.

A plush sofa (the 3381 Loveseat from Sherrill Furniture) softens the sharp lines of a mirrored four-poster bed while lending this retreat another layer of luxury. “It’s my go-to piece for the end of a bed because the back height aligns seamlessly with the mattress—not to mention it’s crazy comfortable,” says Geyer. A smart trim on the skirt gives the loveseat a tailored look. The Hayes Nightstand from Hickory White also received the custom treatment with a Dove finish.

While each of Shay’s projects are totally tailored, they are all approached the same way with priority placed on quality, detail, and durability. Drawing on her discerning eye and extensive knowledge of the industry, she handpicks her collaborators and works with tried-and-true companies like Sherrill Furniture who share her extraordinarily high standards and allow her the creative license to take their work and products to the next level.

“To me, ‘quality’ goes hand-in-hand with ‘consistency,'” says Shay. “My clients put their trust in me, so I must put my trust in my vendors. Order after order, I can expect the best from all of the Sherrill Furniture Brands* and can count on their diverse fabric and finish options to offer something for everyone and every room.”
