Regular FLOWER magazine contributor Margaret Zainey Roux visited Michael Giannelli at his shop, East Hampton Gardens, where he demonstrated how to decorate a woodland Christmas wreath with beautiful hydrangeas and roses. Margaret was so impressed by the ease of the red satin bow Michael made that she asked him to share a video of it. The simple bow uses double-sided satin ribbon. And since it is made with a zip tie, you don’t even have to tie a knot!

MATERIALS

  • Sharp scissors
  • Double-faced Swiss satin ribbon (Michael uses a cranberry color for this bow.)
  • Zip tie

STEP-BY-STEP INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Measure out 4 yards of the ribbon.
  2. Measure 18 – 20 inches for the tail of the bow.
  3. Pinch the ribbon between your thumb and forefinger, then make the first loop of your bow.
  4. Take the remaining ribbon, fold it over onto itself, and pinch to form the second loop.
  5. Continue folding and pinching until you have six loops (three on each side of the pinched ribbon).
  6. Wrap your zip tie around the center and pull it. Before you pull too tightly, make sure one ribbon tail falls to the back and the other can fall forward.
  7. Next, place your fingers into the loops and pull them tight, removing any creases, and fluffing them up. Take one tail and fold it over the bow to hide the zip tie.
  8. The final step is to cut your ribbon tails. Michael makes a single diagonal cut for his.

“The deep garden greens dusted with snow, the faded blue hydrangeas remaining from summer, and a pop of red from a cardinal in flight drove my vision for this dreamy “Woodland Christmas” decor and helped bring it to life.”
